.: Alan Chungs 1/450 Matsuyama Castle
Matsuyama Castle standing on Katsuyama, a 132-meter mountain in the central area of Matsuyama City, is one of the only twelve existing castles in Japan with a castle tower built before the Edo era.
Construction began in 1602 and it took 25 years to complete the castle. Although the castle tower and many other buildings were struck by lightening and burnt down in 1784, the castle was reconstructed in 1854 and its tower built then is what we see today. On its vast grounds are many structures such as turrets and gates while 21 of them including the castle tower, Nohara Yagura (the only existing two-tiered, Boro-style turret in the country), and Ichinomon (gate) have been designated as important cultural assets. From the uppermost floor of the castle tower, a great 360-degree panoramic view can be enjoyed. From here, not only the Matsuyama Plain can be seen but the Seto Inland Sea in the far distance can also be viewed on a clear day. At the southern base of Katsuyama is the Ninomaru Shiseki Teien, a garden that expresses the former Ninomaru Goten's room arrangement with citrus plants/flowers, water, and pebbles. A large ancient well also stands on its grounds and is displayed to the public.
Ropeway and lift services are offered to the eighth station of Katsuyama, allowing visitors to climb all the way to the area near the castle tower.
Additionally, Matsuyama Castle is also known for its beautiful cherry trees and many people visit the castle in spring to enjoy viewing the blossoms. |
